SEI and COLTS Laboratories
McLean, VA . . . May 18, 2000 . . . . . The Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) is pleased to announce that its seven member Board of Directors has unanimously voted to award a contract to COLTS Laboratories of Clearwater, FL to conduct testing of safety eyewear for the SEI certification program. Products tested are spectacles, spectacle replacement lenses, faceshields, filter faceshields, goggles, goggle replacement lenses, welding goggles, welding helmets, replacement filter plates, and replacement lenses.
SEI is expanding its certification program for eye and face protection products this year, and conducted a search for a laboratory with full capabilities to test to U.S. and Canadian eye and face protection performance standards. SEI is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a certification organization for safety and protective equipment. Additionally, SEI is in the final stages of completing requirements of the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) to be accredited as a certification body for safety and protective equipment. The SCC is a Crown Corporation which serves as the Canadian governments focal point for voluntary standardization, represents Canada in international standardization activities, sets out policies and procedures for the development in National Standards of Canada, and for the accreditation of, among others, product certification bodies. When the SCC accreditation is issued, SEI will be a recognized certification agency in Canada and will certify products to Canadian standards.
SEI selected COLTS Laboratories because of their extensive experience in impact and performance testing of lenses, quality assurance, and their state-of-the art laboratory. COLTS Laboratories has thoroughly trained personnel to operate all equipment to determine a products compliance to the following standards: ANSI Z 87.1 Educational and Occupational and Eye and Face Protection, 1989 edition, and CAN/CSA Z94.3 99, Industrial Eye & Face Protectors. COLTS Laboratories successfully passed a comprehensive audit conducted by SEI to ISO Guide 25, and soon will receive accreditation by the world recognized American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA).
For a manufacturer to claim SEI certification of their safety eyewear, compliance testing shall be conducted by COLTS Laboratories. Additionally, manufacturers who participate in the SEI certification program must pass a rigorous quality assurance audit of their manufacturing facility. Also, all products carrying the SEI label are required to be re-certified annually. This means that all products must be re-tested annually, and the manufacturing facility must continue to successfully meet all SEI quality assurance requirements during the follow-up audits.
